The Mazda CX-5 is the Japanese brand’s attempt at making a successful mid-sized SUV, and we think they’ve done a pretty good job of it.

What features does the Mazda CX-5 have?

Inside, a used CX-5 will have a very upmarket feel, with a driver-focused cabin and well-placed controls. In fact, you’d be mistaken for thinking you’re sitting in a car worth twice the price.   

Standard kit available is very impressive too, starting with the SE-L model that features a DAB radio, a 10.25-inch display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity and dual-zone climate control.   

Higher-spec models include electric leather seats, a head-up display, partial digital gauge cluster, and a 10-speaker Bose sound system.   

The boot measures 506 litres, which is very impressive for a mid-sized SUV, and when the rear seats are folded flat, this increases to 1,620 litres.   

There's also plenty of space for passengers in the back thanks to the CX-5's high roofline and overall larger size compared to the smaller CX-3 models.

Being a Mazda, we’d expect the CX-5 to be very reliable – and it is. The CX-5 ranks highly among recognised consumer surveys, and therefore, we don’t think you’ll have any major issues with it.   

How much does the Mazda CX-5 cost to run?

You’ll find a range of petrol and diesel models available, which all feature Mazda’s Skyactiv technology. All you need to know about that is that Mazda uses fairly large engines, but manages to get good economy out of them. 

If you’re looking at a more recent used Mazda CX-5, you’ll also benefit from mild hybrid technology to further reduce emissions. 

Who is the Mazda CX-5 suitable for?

The CX-5 is a great pick for a family car – it has room for five adults, it’s comfortable even on longer trips, and it can even venture off the beaten track and tow a trailer or caravan for those all-important summer holidays. 

It’s got a lot of competition from cars such as the Volkswagen Tiguan, Peugeot 3008, Skoda Karoq and SEAT Ateca.

All of these are tough rivals, but the CX-5 edges it with its high levels of comfort, practicality, interior space and excellent build quality.
