Start nowImpressive looks, raw power, practicality, status. These are all words that perfectly describe the Range Rover Sport.
It’s the sportier version (the name is a bit of a giveaway) of the full-size Range Rover which means it has lower suspension, more aggressive looks and is more suited to the road – but that doesn’t mean it won’t thrash an off-road course with ease.
They might be expensive to buy brand-new, but the deals you can find on the second-hand market are impressive. And because Land Rover has been making the Sport model for a few generations now, plenty are available on the used car market.
Trim levels include the Dynamic SE, Autobiography, SE, SV Edition One and the Vermillion Edition.

Entry-level versions of the Sport come as standard with a lot of great tech – as you’d hope for a car worth in the region of £100,000 when brand-new. Some of these include parking sensors and cameras, automatic lights, heated seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Bluetooth connectivity.
Optional extras such as three-zone climate control, panoramic roof, adaptive cruise control, and a powerful Meridian stereo are available on used cars too.
The main USP of any Land Rover product is space and practicality – two areas this sports SUV excels. There’s plenty of space for three adults to sit comfortably in the back thanks to the car’s width, while a flat floor means the person in the middle seat doesn’t have their legroom compromised.
Plus, despite having a sloping roofline, there’s plenty of headroom for all – front and back. Interior storage space is also generous, with a glovebox big enough for your winter gloves, a box under the centre armrest, and a large 780-litre boot.
Land Rover hasn't had the best history with reliability, as some of its earlier cars will demonstrate. However, more modern examples that have been religiously maintained shouldn't pose any major issues.
The main reason you'd want a used Range Rover Sport is for its safety, though. With a full five-star rating following its most recent Euro NCAP safety test, this is one of the safest family SUVs money can buy.
When you get behind the wheel of the Sport, the first thing you may notice is the size. You’re certainly sitting higher up than most other drivers, other than those sat in vans or lorries. But despite its size, it’s very easy to drive thanks to all its sensors that beep at you, giving you plenty of warning about your surroundings.
The engine options are great too – you can get a petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version. All are superb choices, but the PHEV unit will obviously be better suited to those living in urban environments.
Of course, most owners won’t be taking their fancy SUV off-road, but if you do want to, Sport models fitted with Land Rover’s clever Terrain Response system allow you to climb mountains, cross deserts or frozen wastes with ease.
You should buy a used Range Rover Sport if you're in the market for a large family SUV that's comfortable, practical, fun to drive and has major road presence.
There are very few others that come close to it but its main rivals include the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7 and BMW X5.
Yes, you can get a used Sport on finance. The costs will depend on the model you choose and the type of finance you go for, but there are some brilliant deals across the used market.
Despite what you may have been told, modern Range Rovers are reliable cars. Sure, they were never that dependable but in recent years, Land Rover has really stepped it up and is now making really solid vehicles across the board.
The Sport is 4946mm long, 1990mm wide and 1820mm tall.
The Sport is on the pricier end of road tax, being a large SUV and all, sitting in bands 226 to 1000. This depends heavily on the trim and engine options of your car.
