Going from a small-town car manufacturer to one of Ferrari’s main rivals, McLaren has seen success like no other, and its cars are utterly superb. The two main reasons you’d buy one are powerful engines and curvaceous styling.

Other than the obvious, McLarens also have some other tricks, including supple yet firm (when it needs to be) suspension that’s ideal for the UK’s rough-and-ready country lanes. You also get a solid infotainment system that’s smooth to operate via a large screen – just because it’s a supercar doesn’t mean you can’t have creature comforts.

But the pièce de résistance is the carbon fibre monocoque chassis, which turns McLarens into more durable, stronger and lighter beasts – ideal for track days.

With added chassis strength comes greater safety, which is very important in cars capable of 200mph+ top speeds. To ensure this, McLaren fits its cars with a range of safety features, from stability and traction control to all-around airbags and blind-spot monitoring.

McLaren has had somewhat of a rocky past with reliability. Being a new car brand, there’s always going to be niggles to iron out, and in recent years its cars have drastically improved. To be honest, if you’re buying a £200,000+ bespoke supercar, things can go wrong. But on the whole, newer models are far better than they were 10 years ago.

Perhaps the largest consideration is running costs once you’ve stomached the high initial price of the car or finance deal. Insurance will depend on the driver but is most likely to be high because of how much horsepower is behind you. Fuel costs are another factor to consider, but if you’re buying a supercar worth this much money, you probably aren’t fussed.
